The third beach we visited that day was appropriately named Third Beach. A short hike through the woods led to a remote stretch of coast. It was like our own private beach!

Third Beach
Parking for Third Beach can be found off of La Push Road. The parking lot does fill up fairly quickly on the weekend, mostly with backpackers who frequent this trail. From the parking lot, there is a 1.4 mile hike down to the beach. We saw a few critters along the way, including two slugs and snake.
After a quick hike through the trees, we arrived at quiet beach cove. Far from the tourists and the summer hustle and bustle, this was a great spot to take a breather after a long day of travel.
Unfortunately, we arrived at high tide and missed all of the amazing tide pools Third Beach is well know for. Lesson learned!
At the far side of the beach, we were intrigued by a steep cliff and a long rope. We later watched a couple of backpackers scale down the cliff and it did not look easy. Though we were tempted to see where it led, it was time to head back to find a camping spot.
Next time we find ourselves on the Olympic coast, we hope to scale that cliff and camp at one of the many walk in campsites along the coast. Backpacking anyone?
Tips:
- Consult your local tide tables well before your arrival. Don’t miss the tide pools people!
- Be mindful of how you park. We saw several cars boxed in in the parking lot.
