Sandboarding on the Bruneau Sand Dunes

While visiting family in Boise, ID we took a day trip to Bruneau State Park, home to the Bruneau Sand Dunes. Spoiler Alert : Sandboarding is just as hard as snowboarding!

Roughly an hour south east of Boise, inside Bruneau state park, you’ll find the Bruneau sand dunes. The perfect place to do a little sand boarding…and get a leg workout. Climbing the dunes ain’t easy.

You can rent sand boards and sleds at the visitors center on your way into the park, one for $15 or two for $25. We decided to rent one sand board and one sled.

We chose to board on the first dune you come across on the road. We’ll admit, this dune is basically the bunny hill of the dunes in Bruneau. However, that means the climb up the dunes is shorter and you get more runs down the dune in one visit. Win win right?

We gave both sledding and boarding a fare shot. I preferred sledding as I couldn’t sandboard more than two feet without falling. We also found that the lighter you are, the easier it is to sled. Less friction and all that. Jon, being the snowboarding pro he is, took naturally to sandboarding. It’s not as easy as it seems folks!

Tips:

  • Visitor center will not rent boards when it is hotter than 80°F as the sand could cause burns
  • Grab wax from the visitor center, you’ll need to wax your board before each ride down the dune.
  • Bring sunscreen, a hat, and a pair of sandals to protect your feet from the hot sand
