Cape Disappointment : The Best Farewell from WA

On our way south to Portland, we made a quick pit stop at Cape Disappointment. Needless to say, our predicted 30 minute stop turned into 2 hours. This place is magical.

Cape Disappointment is a Washington State Park and has a daily entrance fee of $10. We originally planned to visit to just see Deadman’s Cove, but too our surprise we found so much more.

Waikiki Beach

We started with Waikiki Beach. This beach is a short walk from the first parking lot in the park, so we figured why not. We were so happy with what we found. And I’m not just talking about the fact that dogs are allowed. The views of the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse from the beach were unreal with the menacing storm clouds in the background. We just stood with our toes in the sand and stared for a good while.

Deadman’s Cove

We then set out to find what we traveled here for, Deadman’s Cove (where my finger is pointed on the map). To our dismay, there were “No Trespassing” signs posted at the entrance of a very sketchy wooden staircase down to the cove. We later found out that it was closed to prevent erosion. We snapped some pictures from the trail and decided to continue Cape Disappointment Lighthouse just up the road.

Cape Disappointed Lighthouse

The trail from the parking lot to the lighthouse is only 0.6 miles but included a good amount of elevation change. From the lighthouse base we got spectacular views of the cape as well as the US Coast Guard ships passing by.

There is so much more to explore in this park, including more beaches, a lagoon, lakes, another lighthouse, and tons of trails. With that being said, we will definitely be back soon.

Tips :

  • Buy a Washington Discover Pass for $30 to access all of Washington’s state parks for the year.
